An invitation to play

One of my favorite ways to introduce music to the very young crowd is through creating a musical environment that invites a child to play with sound.  Whether that means leaving our boomwhackers out, placing pots and pans out on the table like a drum set, or simply owning a piano, I love it when my children engage in musical exploration on their own terms.  Musical toys are a fun way to do this too.  I handpicked two Little Tikes Tap a Tune instruments that can help.

Meaningful music exposure can begin with infancy.

Little Tikes is a well known and respected maker of children's toys.  While I don't actually own either of these toys, I am very familiar with them as I have volunteered in a few childhood nursery settings that own both of these toys.  They get hammered, thrown, banged with various other toys, and have held up surprisingly well- a sturdy, classic toy.  The little piano's four notes create a major triad, "Do-Mi-So-Do", and are in tune.  I've had a lot of fun playing simple accompaniment rhythms on the little piano while singing to small children.  The drum has a surprisingly rich tone for a toy and can be played either by hitting the drum head or sliding the handles on the grooved sides like a guiro.  Lots of fun!  Good luck.

About the author

Tamsyn

My name is Tamsyn and I love music. I got my bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from USU. I spent many years teaching private piano lessons until I had children of my own. I have attended several children workshops on how to teach children music. I really like the Kodaly method, but have adapted a lot of different techniques for my own children.
