Why Ukulele?
I have always been drawn to the ukulele and guitar as an adult, but the ukulele is of special interest for this website because of its amazing suitability for children. They are small and fairly inexpensive which is a great bonus for parents on a tight budget, and even better, they are fairly easy to learn to play. Within a few minutes a child with the finger dexterity to press the strings firmly against the finger board can learn their first chord and play a couple of Nursery Rhymes already familiar to them. Like the piano, one can accompany themselves and sing at the same time. Unlike the piano, the Ukulele is very portable and playing chords is easier than picking out a melody. The Ukulele is easier for children than the guitar because it only has four strings. For a small child, there is also the bonus of the smaller size, which makes it easier to hold.
Many parents are excited about their child's interest in learning an instrument, but are concerned about the cost and space an instrument would take up. Their home may be too small for a piano, or they may not have the money for one anyway.
There are more than 101 reasons why the ukulele may be a good fit for you. Within a few weeks, children can learn a few chords and sing dozens of songs with them. They can take their uke with them wherever they go. It can be a great confidence booster, playing for friends and even total strangers as they gather around to sing along. It happens!
For all of these reasons, I have been keen on the idea of incorporating Ukulele lessons for kids into our website for quite some time. What held me back? The simple reason that I didn't is because, well, I don't play the Ukulele. So I reached out and met a professional Ukulele artist on Fiverr, Brooke Palmer. She has agreed to collaborate with us and has put together a basic course designed especially for children with absolutely no previous experience. Not only is Brooke a professional musician, but she also has years of teaching experience in Elementary settings and she has a gift for making her instrument engaging and relevant for children.
