"All of the materials of hers that I have tried are great."
-Liz Austin from Doman Mom
"Tamsyn Spackman... is a "Doman mom" too. She has taken the Doman philosophy (which is, in a nutshell: you can teach a tiny child absolutely anything that you can present to him in an honest, factual, and joyous way), along with her degree in vocal performance and years of teaching piano lessons to children, and created a lot of fantastic music resources that make music theory fun and accessible to young children...
"All of the materials of hers that I have tried are great. They are well-made, fun, and easy to understand - for both the parent and the child."
"[It has] has ignited a passion I knew was hiding just beneath the surface."
-Adelina Priddis from Home Maid Simple
"While the lessons are directed at kids, adults could learn and benefit from these as well. For example - part of the membership gave me access to a Do Re Mi printable strip for the keys. After watching Tamsyn's video on how to use this, I learned more about music theory and how scales work than I ever did when I actually took music classes!"
"Teaching Children Music has given my kids a good introduction to music that has ignited a passion I knew was hiding just beneath the surface. It also gives us the freedom to fit it into our schedule and our budget. A one-year membership to Teaching Children Music costs less than 1 month of in person piano lessons - at least compared to everywhere I've looked! The success I've seen with my kids and the knowledge I've gained myself has been worth it, so I know we'll be renewing when our year is up."
"The Solfege Train taught me more about music theory than 10 years of piano lessons."
"I love The Solfege Train, which I bought from Tamsyn a year ago. With this membership, it's available both as a book and printables, if you want to use it screen free, which was important to me when I got it, or as interactive videos, which are the way we're going now.
"Seriously, learning Moveable Do with the Solfege Train taught me more about music theory than 10 years of piano lessons. It teaches ear training and theory, two things I'm seriously weak on, in a very [Early Learning] way (my 2 year old does fine).
"And there's even more stuff I haven't even looked at yet! I'm really excited about it!"
"My kids don't realize they're learning and not just playing games."
"I absolutely love the resources available at Teaching Children Music! My 4yo twins and 2yo choose to play Rainbow Castle over CandyLand, and have no idea they're learning how to read music. And my fiercly independent 6yo is really loving 'teaching herself' to play the piano using the color-coded insert at the top of the piano in conjunction with the John Thompson Teaching Little Fingers to Play book I color-coded like Tamsyn shows in the Nursery Rhymes for Piano course. My kids don't realize they're learning and not just playing games when I use the resources from Teaching Children Music!"
"There is always something new to check out and add to our music education."
"Our kids are "Hands On" learners! They love to learn new things, but they also immensely enjoy hands on activities to support and review the material. I have written on why we feel that musical experiences early in life are important here. However, in order for music to have a notable effect on brain development, a child must physically engage in musical activities. These activities must provide a comprehensive sensory experience as well.
"So, not just listening, but dancing, clapping, singing, guessing, comparing, coloring, playing.... All those things and more we are trying to do with our kids on a daily basis. So naturally I am always on a look out for materials I can use in our daily music routine. Tamsyn's materials are a perfect fit in that regard, and the good thing there are more coming and there is always something new to check out and to add to our music education.
"I am looking for well-rounded, fun music experience for my children -- we listen to music, we play, we do ballet and visit theaters, we play music games, do solfege, they're starting to play piano and having fun with rhythm instruments. They love reading books. And I am delighted that a fellow parent with young children ( who also happened to be a music professional) is inspired to share excellent materials all of us can use, that are tried and proven by her own children and inspired by their questions and interests.
"Now we are looking forward to a Music adventure book that is going to be released!
"I highly recommend it to everyone."
"Tamsyn, I'm so thankful that I subscribed to your website because there are a lot of treasures to find like printables and videos. The printables are really great because I can apply it to my daughter who is 3 yrs old what we have learned in Little Musician. She loves the games though I changed it a bit to suit her interest but so far she likes them. I am also learning because I don't have any music background except drawing of staff.
"I highly recommend it to everyone because there are tons of stuff there and I know Tamsyn keeps on adding more."
"My children have done really well with the piano pieces."
"I love this web-site. My children have done really well with the piano pieces and the Chord Factory story. We’re looking forward to getting our uke fixed so my daughter can start learning to play."
Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:
May I share my login details?
You cannot share your login information with others. This means if you are a parent, a membership is for your household alone. If you are a teacher, you may create print-outs for your OWN students. If your membership expires, you may no longer use printouts you downloaded with your students. You may use the videos for your own classroom use. In cases where multiple teachers in a school or music studio would use the website, each teacher must purchase their own membership.
Should I expect a package?
Nothing will be shipped to you. The printouts are in digital format and you will have to print them out yourself, cutting and laminating as desired. We wish to branch out into physical products in the future as our company grows.
May I sell printouts from the site?
You do not have resell rights. You may not sell materials made with materials on this site. If you have a music studio or classroom, using these materials with your students adds value to your studio and is permissible as long as you have access to printing the materials directly from our site. You may not sell them. All materials on the website are owned by www.teaching-children-music.com. All rights reserved. We have an affiliate program, which is an excellent and LEGAL alternative to pirating. Don't be a pirate.
Are these materials aligned with national standards?
At this time I do not have plans to align our website with common core or any other national standards.
One of my main goals is to create materials that are as universal as possible. Our community has attracted people from all over the world. I do not want to be confined by the scope and sequence of any set of national standards. Placing music skills into tidy boxes can be problematic in that it can discourage older children from going back to review the basics, or quick learners from tackling more advanced concepts.
Music is one of those topics that has its foundation in logic and reason. In beauty and simplicity. It is centered on creativity and inner art. So I'll stick with what I know best; teaching music skills one step at a time, covering the basics thoroughly, and building on that foundation.
What are your future projects?
In addition to the courses listed above, I have an advanced theory video course, more piano music, an intro to recorder course in the planning stages, a chapter book about chord charts, and a growing list of ideas I would love to work on. I want to collaborate with more musicians who specialize in areas I am weak. Teamwork! I am also working on a few physical products that will be available separately. My goal is to make music literacy an accessible subject at an affordable price. My purpose is to bring joy to children as they discover the wonderful world of music.
What can I download?
You can download the printables.
You cannot download the videos. Like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other video subscription services, you will need internet access to watch the videos. You are in essence renting them for the duration of your membership. As we grow, we will be making our videos available on DVD and digital download available separately.
Do you have an affiliate program?
We sure do! We recognize the value of collaborative marketing and are excited about this new addition. Earn up to 50% commissions! We will offer payouts as low as $10 available on referred purchases at least 30 days old.
We have some awesome tools to help you be successful. Aside from buttons and banners, we have a special feature that will allow you to connect your affiliate code to any page on our website, including blog posts. We will also help you by suggesting posts for social media, and give you ideas on how to share what your children or students are learning. We will also offer unique affiliate coupon codes typically 10% off.
We hope you'll join us!
I have no musical background. Will I be able to use this?
Absolutely! Some of the printables will be easier for trained musicians to use because they were made with the Orff and Kodaly methods in mind, but there are also videos that you can watch with your child and learn together. If you find something you don't know how to use, or you just want a music-related question answered, you can ask me, and I will be happy to help. When you become a member, I become your online teacher and you have access to me. Chances are, if you have the question, others are wondering the same thing, so I really value this interaction.
